The T&N Asbestos Trustee Company scheme was setup in 2006 for people who were exposed to asbestos during the course of their employment with the company or due to the activities of a T&N company and which has resulted in them being diagnosed with an asbestos related disease. The exposure may have been many years ago and as far back as the 1960s. However as asbestos disease takes up to 50 years to develop, someone exposed all those years ago, may only now being diagnosed with an asbestos disease.
Due to the company now being defunct, the scheme allows people to recover compensation if diagnosed with an asbestos related illness as a result of T&N's actions.
Any claim regarding a T&N company must be submitted directly to the trust and meet the following requirements:-
Initially founded in Rochdale (1871) under the name 'Turner Brothers', the company originally specialised in manufacturing cotton-cloth-based packaging. Eight years later, Turner Brothers became the first company in the United Kingdom to weave asbestos fibres to cloth and underwent a slight name change to 'Turner Brothers Asbestos Company'.
The company opened an asbestos cement plant at Trafford Park, Manchester soon before the first World War, producing the 'Trafford Tile' (an asbestos cement sheet), which was commonly used for building construction.
The Turner & Newall group was formed in 1920 following the union of four businesses' - The Washington Chemical Company, J.W Roberts, Newalls Insulation Company and TBA Industrial Products Ltd. The group would operate from a plant in Leeds until 1959 after the events of the Armley asbestos disaster.
The company relocated to Manchester and expanded into the automotive industry in 1949, producing key engine components such as gaskets.
Turner & Newall were acquired by Federal-Mogul in 1998 and put into administration as a result of asbestos claims in October 2001.*
